THE HEADPHONE BUYING CHECKLIST
Check the setup.
Seven checks before you choose. Keep the comparison open while you work through them.
- Name the job.
Write down where you will use the headphones: one-ear DJ cueing, recording, editing or a mix. Start with the task you do most.
- Check where the pads sit.
The standard HD 25 is on-ear; the MDR-7506 is over-ear. Try the fit with your glasses if you wear them. Lower weight alone does not establish a comfort winner.
- Measure the cable route.
The standard HD 25 has an approximately 1.5 m detachable cable. The Sony coiled cable is approximately 1.2 m, extending to approximately 3 m. Allow slack as you move.
- Check your headphone output.
Both use a 3.5 mm stereo plug with a 6.3 mm adapter. Check what your equipment needs. Neither model provides Bluetooth or a microphone for calls.
- Check the exact package.
Compare the standard HD 25 with MDR-7506. Light, Plus, refurbished and bundled options are different buying choices. Check seller, condition and included parts.
- Separate specifications from a listening test.
Fit, cable and construction narrow the choice. Frequency range and maximum output do not establish which pair will sound better to you. Assess sound and comfort yourself.
- Decide whether a new pair helps.
Name the problem your current headphones leave unsolved. If they already do the job, you may not need to buy anything.
